Governor and First Gentleman Team with Eat Drink RI, Food Bank for Healthy Recipe Challenge

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Governor Gina M. Raimondo and First Gentleman Andy Moffit today announced the names of community leaders who will join them as judges for the first RI Kids' Healthy Recipe Challenge ("Healthy Kids Challenge"). Monday is the last day to submit recipes, and to date, over 50 have been received. The judges are:

• Nicole Alexander-Scott, MD, MPH, Director, RI Department of Health

• David Dadekian, Founder/President, Eat Drink RI

• Michaela Johnson, Co-Host, The Rhode Show

• Maria Meza, Executive Chef, El Rancho Grande

• Andrew Schiff, CEO, Rhode Island Community Food Bank

• Dr. Ken Wagner, Commissioner, RI Department of Education

"Andy and I are grateful that these community leaders there are helping us find our youngest top chefs," said Raimondo.

"Rhode Island is home to some of the best food in the country, and I know our judges will be impressed by the delicious, healthy and affordable meals that our kids create," said Moffit.

"It is on all of us to make Rhode Island healthier, and it is inspiring to see Rhode Island kids leading that charge," said Rhode Island Department of Health Director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott.

Participants are challenged to use local ingredients and create affordable recipes. "I love using fresh, local ingredients and cooking from scratch to make healthy and delicious recipes. I can't wait to taste the creations of our future chefs," said El Rancho Grande executive chef Maria Meza.

The judges will choose the best healthy and affordable recipes in three categories -- starter, entrée, and dessert. The winning recipes will be published in a recipe booklet to be made available for download on the Governor's website, and the winning dish for each category will be served at the 2016 RI Kid's Healthy Luncheon hosted by Raimondo and Moffit at the RI Community Food Bank on Saturday, January 9.

The Healthy Kids Challenge invites children in grades 5-8 to submit a healthy and affordable recipe with a photo or drawing of the dish and estimated cost of preparing the dish by Monday, November 30, 2015 to:
